There is only one place on the planet that I long to be in at least once a year. If I don’t make it to this fabled location I feel as if I can’t go on living until I’ve smelled its sweet grass and touched its crisp night air. I’ve watched hundreds of meteors fill its dark skies and rolled down glades of misty wildflowers. This place I speak of is Blackwater Falls State Park in Davis, West Virginia.
Tucked within the nooks and crannies of the Allegheny Mountains, the journey to Blackwater Falls is part of the allure of this decades old vacation destination. Winding through historic valleys and canopies of towering evergreen trees, its hard not to be instantly relaxed and intrigued at the same time. Wondering what you will see around each curve of the back country roads which lead you to it. The journey truly is a part of the destination.
Once inside the park you’ll find three different accommodation options. Camping (which is only available seasonally), a room at the Lodge or a private mountain cabin. Don’t even think twice. The cabin is the way to go. No television, no phone, no internet. Just you and the essentials. Not to worry, the cabins are modern enough with a full kitchen and bath unless you reserve one of the newer cabins, which I highly recommend you do not. Request cabins number 1-26 for a truly exquisite experience.
Wildlife abounds inside the park. You’ll have deer grazing in your front yard by day and groundhogs scurrying about at dusk.
There are miles and miles of trails to hike. Each one boasting magnificent views and hidden mountain streams. You can choose the difficulty of the hike as well.
With 2,358 acres of untouched wilderness you can truly take in how magnificent mother nature is.
There’s a reason it’s called Wild, Wonderful West Virginia and my wild and wonderful heart will continue to find its way here for as long as we both shall live.
