Recently a new eatery opened its doors to customers in the bourgeoning Medical City/Lake Nona area of Orlando. I make the drive on Narcoossee from 192 to the 417 several times per week and have been keenly keeping an eye on Urban Hibachi.
The restaurant held its grand opening earlier this month, but my husband and I decided to give the staff a few days to work out the kinks before we went in for a proper review.
So on a quiet, rainy Tuesday evening a few hours before closing time we shuffled in for a meal and an adult beverage.
The space itself is quite cozy and offers a variety of seating including table top, banquette, booth, high top and barstool seating at the sushi bar.
We opted for a booth and took a look at the beverage menu.
The bar menu is strictly beer and wine. They have a pretty solid selection of sake as well as reds and whites. I settled on a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and was delighted in how delicate the stemware was.
The restaurant manager Vivian was very attentive and answered all of my questions about what I could veganize on the menu. If she didn’t know the answer to a specific question about ingredients she made sure to consult with one of the chefs.
There were several plant-based options on the ‘Hot Appetizers” section of the menu that could be made vegan like the Edamame, Yucca Fritters, Shishito Peppers and Fried Brussels Sprouts but I was immediately drawn to the Harimaki.
These were three perfectly delicate and crisp Japanese vegetable spring rolls with a side of sweet chili dipping sauce. They were so good that I wouldn’t share with my husband and actually ended up placing a second order for them later that night.
I also indulged in some sushi from the “Makimono” section of the menu.
This is a modification of the Mango Tango Roll. Inside you’ll find asparagus and cucumber as well as fried tofu which was a substitution for the coconut shrimp. On top is thinly sliced mango and avocado. The roll is finished with eel sauce which the manager confirmed was actually vegan. No eel, just sweetened soy sauce basically. You’ll need to ask to omit the cream cheese on this roll as well.
We enjoyed our date night here and will definitely be returning again. For more information visit UrbanHibachiLakeNona.com
