I was recently invited out to Sofra Mediterranean Grill on International Drive in Orlando for dinner with my husband. The thought that I might be able to re-live a little bit of my Mediterranean cruise vacation in Orlando excited me very much.
The aesthetic of the restaurant is clean and modern with huge floor to ceiling windows for people watching. Our early arrival at the restaurant allowed us to snag one of these coveted spots and our dinner service began.
We were presented with Complementary Bread Service as we perused the menu. Sofra Mediterranean Grill is not a dedicated vegan restaurant which is perfect when dining out with ‘pregan’ friends and family.
This is the Cold Meza Trio which is a vegetarian trio of creamy homemade hummus, baba ghanoush and stuffed grape leaves. To make it vegan I just omitted the yogurt sauce that came with the grape leaves.
Here’s a close up of each component of this appetizer…
The Hummus is a cooked chickpea spread topped with paprika, parsley, whole chickpeas and a drizzle of extra virgin all of oil.
The Grape Leaves were filled with rice, tomato, parsley and fresh mint.
And finally, the Baba Ganoush was is a blend of grilled eggplant and tahini sauce topped with sumac, parsley and extra virgin olive oil.
This appetizer could have been a meal in and of itself, but alas there was more headed my way.
The regular bartender was off the evening that we dined, but the restaurant manager made me a Mediterranean Sunset which is one of the signature cocktails at Sofra Mediterranean Grill. It was a mix of vodka, sour, grenadine and black raspberry liquor garnished with a lemon wedge.
For my entree I went with the Falafel Plate. I never fry foods in my own home, so when I get the chance to eat falafel, I take it. My falafel plate was composed of six golden fried falafel garnished with pickled beets, tomatoes, onions and seasonal vegetables which happened to be zucchini and yellow squash. The falafel are served with a tahini sauce on the side for dipping.
I didn’t find out until a few days later that I could have ordered vegan baklava for dessert. ? I miss baklava so much and haven’t had it since going vegan, but this gives me an excuse to return to Sofra for another meal again soon.
