These Photos Prove Why a Sunset Sail Should Be On Your Travel Bucket List

Imagine the sensation of drifting along the bay with only the sound of the wind in your sails and the warm glow of the sunset on your face.

There’s a reason why the Loews Don Cesar Resort and Spa in St. Pete Beach, Florida has teamed up with Captain Dan Peretz of Dolphin Landings for their Summer Like a Local package.

This week my husband and I had our very first sailboat experience. My hope is that these photos have captured the essence of that experience and that they will convince you to add a sunset sail adventure onto your travel bucket list.

There was a slight hesitation when I agreed to step aboard the Magic at Dolphin Landings on Florida’s west coast. I’ve had some incidences with sea sickness in the past on smaller vessels. Would I get sick? Would the waters be rough? Would the tacking back and forth make me queasy? All valid concerns right?

These things raced through my mind as I sat on that dock and waited for clearance to board the boat. You know what they say about worry. It’s like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do, but doesn’t get you anywhere. I was prepared for the worst and hoping for the best. Plan B. At least there was wine in the picnic basket at my feet.

Captain Dan came over and introduced himself with a warm smile and a handshake. He had a striking resemblance to a young Ernest Hemingway and I instantly felt at ease. We all boarded the immaculate dual masted, 51 foot vessel and were soon underway.

What surprised me the most about the entire experience was how serene it was. Since I had never been on a sailbot before I didn’t know just how quiet it would be. You don’t feel the rumbling of a diesel engine under your bare feet. Your senses aren’t assaulted with the smell of exhaust fumes nor the noise pollution crated by the roaring of the motor. You glide effortlessly along the surface of the water with the breeze brushing gently across your skin.

I have never felt so free and so relaxed in my life.

Even when the mast looked like it might not cooperate with the bridge above us, I felt safe in the hands of Captain Dan…well at the feet of the captain…

Dan has been sailing these waters for several years and knew precisely where to take us on our journey to watch dolphins at play.

There was plenty of room for my husband and I to enjoy our wine and cheese spread as we chatted up our fellow passengers. One couple was celebrating their  20th wedding anniversary and the other ended up being from our hometown.

And hey…Chardonnay just tastes better on a sailboat.

The sunset was fast approaching and Captain Dan timed our arrival at the mouth of the channel at Pass-a-Grille beach perfectly! We never entered the Gulf of Mexico so there was no reason for me to be concerned with the condition of the water. It was smooth sailing the entire voyage.

While I snapped pictures of the sunset we watched dolphins frolicking and fishermen casting lines as the remains of the day slipped away beyond the horizon.

The journey back to Dolphin Landings was just as serene and we ended up pacing a drone which bobbed and weaved silently along the shoreline beside us.

The entire experience was dreamlike and one in which I became a sailor for life.
