Sips and Bites from a South African Wine Dinner at Christner’s Orlando

Christner's Prime Steak and Lobster South African Wine Dinner

When my friend Lisa Wilk from “Taste Cook Sip” extended an invite to join her at a South African Wine Pairing Dinner at one of Orlando’s most established Steakhouses I didn’t even hesitate. Sign me up! Lisa is a wine educator and I could use some instruction when it comes to wine from this region.

My only other exposure to South African wines has been dinner at Jiko in the Animal Kingdom Lodge. The wines presented on this night had been hand selected by Sovereign Selection which is comprised of a husband and wife team, Jay and Monica Sadie.

I knew when I stepped into Christner’s that this was going to be a dining experience. The family owned and operated restaurant has been serving guests for over 21 years now.

THE CUTTING BOARD DINNER SERIES

Every dinner should start with a tall glass of bubbly. Don’t you agree?

WELCOME COURSE

The “Welcome Course” for the evening was a shrimp sampler. I passed this presentation over to Lisa because of a¬†shellfish sensativity.

The shrimp were paired with a Chenin Blanc which I was happy to sip on its own. Tasting notes were of pear, honey and vanilla with a smoky finish. The grapes used for this wine come from 45 year old bush vines.

FIRST COURSE

The first course was a beautifully prepared sesame seared tuna. The tuna had a texture similar to steak and a delightful sauce was served alongside. It was paired with a 2010 Avontuur Minelli Pinot Noir Reserve out of Stellenbosch. This wine is matured 12 months in French oak and contains notes of black cherry, plum and violet.

SECOND COURSE

Our second course was a dinner salad. I was happy that I had a bit of my Pinot Noir remaining. Pinot Noir and bacon are a dynamite combo.

The pairing that came with the salald was a 2012 Clos Malverne Pinotage Reserve which won Top Three of all Pinotage wines in South Africa. This wine was dry with notes of mulberry and black currant.

DINNER

The dinner course was a fork tender filet mignon paired with a 2011 Boschkloof Cabernet Sauvignon which was comprised of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc.

The grapes harvested for this wine come from 30 year old vines. Tasting notes are blackberry, anise spice and a toasty oak finish.

DESSERT

The dessert course was something you would come to expect from a traditional steakhouse. A slice of chocolate cake large enough to satisfy the entire table. Dessert was paired with a 2009 Cheval D’Or Warlord Red Blend. The blend was quite complex and consisted of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, Petite Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Mourvedre.
