Anatomy of an Epic Girls Weekend at the Walt Disney World Boardwalk Inn {Day 1}

Think Walt Disney World is just for kids? Pshaw!

Check out the epic Girls Weekend my friend Susan Pazera and I just had. And we didn’t get on one single theme park ride! Anyone have a cure for a Disney Hangover?

Friday

On Friday I headed out to the airport to pick up precious cargo…my girlfriend Susan, aka Mom on the Map. Susan was headed to the Walt Disney World Resort for a 1-day conference and I was coming along to help her fill up the empty space between the conference and her flights.  I’m good for something right?  Her flight arrived at 9:30 am and we were all checked into our room at Disney’s Boardwalk Inn by 11 am. Thank you oh mighty hotel gods for letting us check in to the room early.

The Boardwalk Inn is posh! It’s one of Walt Disney World’s Deluxe Resorts and you’re not going to sleep in a pirate ship or fart fairy dust in the bathrooms there.  This hotel is elegant and is themed to a turn of the century “Atlantic City style” waterfront resort.  In back of the resort you will find an authentic boardwalk lined with shops, restaurants, nightlife and entertainment, along with four other resorts and the International Gateway (back entrance) into the Epcot theme park.  All of this is situated around Crescent Lake.  Come to think of it, I’m surprised they even let me in.

At the moment, Epcot is currently in the midst of it’s Fake Food & Wine Festival…or as they like to call it The Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival.  Susan had yet to experience it so we slapped on some sunscreen, grabbed our credit cards and headed out into the perfect Florida Spring air for a walk over to Epcot to do some damage.

Upon entering Epcot via the International Gateway we headed right into the France Pavilion. Can you picture yourself on this bench right now sipping a cold drink and chatting up one of your best girlfriends?  When you vacation without kids you can do that instead of going commando in the parks. True story.

As we approached Morocco, I started reminiscing about my most recent visit to the Spice Road Table, Epcot’s newest waterside restaurant. Susan had been wanting to try it out and I knew that they had killer sangria so we headed in for a few small bites.

She got the hummus. I got the stuffed grape leaves. We both got a glass of the white sangria and then we sat and talked for a while ejoying our food and each others company. We asked to be seated outside near the water and we were seated next to a table with two other women who seemed to be doing the same thing that we were…having some much needed girl time and bonding at “the most magical place on earth”.

We continued our leisurely stroll around the World Showcase sharing and sampling a few more items from the Outdoor Kitchens before heading back to the resort to rest up a bit.

Susan had only gotten about 2 hours of sleep Thursday night so she was due for a mini nap. I took time to sit out on our porch in the courtyard and take in the lovely view.

We had plans to meet up with another blogger over at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for dinner at the Brown Derby restaurant. This is one of Walt Disney World’s signature dining locations where you’ll find more than just hot dogs and funnel cakes. Don’t get me wrong, this girl can throw back some fried dough, just ask the local Krispy Kreme manager, but we were keepin’ it classy.  The wine and cocktail list at the Derby is extensive and the menu offers dishes like Rack of Lamb and Seafood Cioppino.

We had a lovely, leisurely dinner with friends and then headed back over to Epcot for the IllumiNations Sparkling Dessert Party.  It was here that we met up with a few more of our lady blogger friends and shared champagne toasts and Mickey Bars.

Along with an amazing private view of Illuminations: Reflections of Earth.

Probably one of the best moments came when the gaggle of us girls grabbed extra Mickey Ice Cream Bars and Mickey Ice Cream Sandwiches on our way out of the dessert party and handed them out to kids waiting to watch the fireworks with their families. It was an amazing moment seeing the looks on the faces of all of the children who were gifted with these surprise desserts and definitely a memory I will keep with me forever.

See you tomorrow for a look at the shenanigans we get into on Day 2
