Carnival’s rich Italian history is well known and apparent on their cruise ships. Not only are many of their ships built and designed in Italy, the far majority of Carnival Cruise Line’s Captains are Italian.
Cucina del Capitano or “The Captain’s Kitchen”, is yet another homage to this Italian lineage.
You can find Cucina del Capitano on Carnival Breeze, Carnival Magic, Carnival Sunshine and Carnival Vista. This comfortable, relaxed setting is the perfect place to satisfy your Italian dinner classics craving. In fact, Cucina recreates some of the very best recipes that the ships’ captains and crew grew up on.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is designed to encapsulate that of a typical Italian Captain’s home. You’ll find framed, archival photographs adorning the walls, wood accents, and ornate ironwork. The waiters are warm and inviting often singing and dancing around the floor to classic Italian songs.
The entire experience is topped off with a giant barrel of Chianti on wheels.
The Captain’s Pasta Bar Lunch
When lunch time rolls around Cucina del Capitano is transformed into The Captain’s Pasta Bar. Grab a seat and an order sheet and tick off your choice of pasta, sauce, veggies and proteins. You can add a salad and bread or you can opt for their out-of-this-world lasagna. Enjoy the sea views while waiting for your meal to be delivered. Lunch here is included in your cruise fare.
Sip on a Bellini or a classic Italian beer while sharing heaping portions of carbonara, bistecca, meatballs and arancini. Do not skip out on the braised short rib. It is sublime!

Dinner in Cucina del Capitano is an alternative to the main dining room and comes with a supplemental fee. Which begs the question to be answered “Is Cucina del Capitano worth paying for on a Carnival Cruise?” and the answer is a resounding YES!
Cucina del Capitano carries an upcharge of $15. Reservations are recommended. If you book dinner here on the first night of your cruise a carafe of wine is included complementary.
Special thanks goes out to Carnival for hosting me and my daughter on this cruise and at this dinner. I was not compensated to write this post and all opinions are my own.
