Blogging has changed my life! When I started my very first blog I was broke and teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. Life was miserable. I needed something that I could pour myself into. Something that I could love, nurture and grow. For me that thing was a blog. Since I’ve started blogging I’ve made amazing blogger friends, taken more press trips than I can recount, met celebrities, been given access to private spaces that most would find impossible to gain access to and more importantly…made money! I even built and sold a blog for $36,200!
12 months from now you’ll wish you’d started today.
Turn off the TV. Put your cell phone on vibrate and lock the door. I’m going to show you how to start your very own blog in less than 15 minutes.
Here we go…

1. Pick a Name and Hosting
This step is pretty important. You want to pick the right name. Avoid names with an expiration date like ThisTeenTravels.com. You have to think long term. What happens when you’re on the cusp of your 20th birthday? Make it short and sweet. No hyphens or numbers. You don’t want to cause any confusion when someone asks what your blog’s name is. Use a thesaurus to brainstorm ideas.
Now you need to find out if your name is already taken. It’s also helpful to check the major social networks you will be using to see if your name is available there as well. This is how you will find out.
Head on over to Bluehost.
Click on the green button that says “Get Started Now”.
It’s time to select your hosting plan. Blog hosting is like paying rent to a landlord. You own everything inside your blog and the landlord just provides the space for everything to live in. I have used Bluehost for several years and have been very satisfied with their competitive pricing and customer service. You can go with any plan that you’d like. All plans are paid in full for the year.
After you’ve selected a plan, you will be taken to a page where you can enter in that blog name you came up with and see if it’s available. You want to enter your domain name (aka blog name) into the “New Domain” field. Be sure and type in your name with no spaces and then hit the blue “Next” button.
Huzzah! Your domain name is available!
On the next screen you are going to enter in your “Account” and “Billing” information. You will also be offered special add-ons under “Package Information”. I would suggest adding on the “Domain Privacy Protection” so that your personal information, email address and phone number are kept private and away from spammers.
Congratulations! You are now a website owner!
It’s time to get blogging.
2. Install WordPress
WordPress is the standard in blogging software. It’s SUPER easy to use and it’s FREE. I am not a techy person. In fact, the tech part of blogging is the thing I like the least. WordPress is so widely utilized because of its “what you see is what you get” user interface and the fact that it has so many free plug-ins that make your blog run like a well oiled machine.
Here’s how you install WordPress on your blog.
Login to your Bluehost account.
Once you are logged in you are going to click on the “Install WordPress” icon under “Website Builders”.
A new window will open with two options. You want to click on the green “Install” button in the “Do It Yourself (FREE)” section.
Next you are going to select your domain and then click the green “Check Domain” button.
On the final page you are going to check the box next to “I have read the terms and conditions” and then click on the green “Install Now” button and Voila’! Your blog software is installed and you are one step away from going live!
You should now have a “Your install is complete!” confirmation page with the following info:
Be sure and write down all of this information! After you have the info written down, type your Admin URL into your web browser and you will be taken to your blog’s login screen which will look like this:
Enter in the “Username” and “Password” you were assigned that you wrote down and hit the blue “Log In” button.
You are officially logged into your brand new website!
3. Pick a Template
Now it’s time to make your site look pretty. There are literally hundreds of free blog templates available within the WordPress software. After you are logged in, look to the left side of your Dashboard. Hover over “Appearance” and click “Themes”. Select “Add New Theme” and you will be taken to a page where you can browse by “Featured”, “Popular” and “Latest” Themes.
Have fun picking the template that most appeals to you and here’s to your blogging success!
